As in previous years, WACV will include a PhD Forum to provide an additional opportunity for junior researchers to promote their work, network, and interact with experienced researchers.

Application Process

Applicants must be close to graduating (e.g., within two years of defending their dissertation) or recently graduated (e.g., defended within the last six months). Priority will be given to applicants with well-formed thesis plans that are earlier in their studies. Please follow the instructions on the application form if you are interested in participating.

  • Decisions announced: January 25th, 2018
  • PhD Forum event: noon-2pm, Monday, March 12th, 2018

Event Details

The forum will consist of a lunch (provided) and a poster session in which each PhD student presents a poster that summarizes the main contributions of their thesis.  Each student will be paired with a mentor, who will be a senior researcher so that they can have a deep discussion of their research and career plans/goals.

Travel Awards

Selected students will receive travel reimbursements for a maximum of $1,250 in expenses. The awards will be in the form of a reimbursement check that you will receive after the conference and after you submit forms/receipts.  Please follow the appropriate instructions based on the location of your institution.

All students will need itemized receipts that show exactly what they paid for. Allowable expenses include:

  • Airfare (receipt must show issue date and form of payment)
  • Ground transportation (Note: If you want to drive your own car provide where you are traveling from. You will be reimbursed for mileage at the federal rate; for cabs, you need to submit a receipt.)
  • Conference registration and extra page fees
  • Hotel or AirBnB (Note: Don’t use AirBnB if you can’t get a formal receipt. Room service cannot be reimbursed.)
  • Meals not provided by the conference (Note: Receipts must be itemized.)

If you are a student at US-based institution, after the conference (deadline: April 13, 2018) you will need to:

  1. Scan your receipts and put all of them in a single PDF named Firstname_Lastname_Receipts.pdf
  2. Fill out a W-9 form if you are a US citizen or other U.S. person, including a resident alien individual or a W-8Ben form if you are a non-resident alien. Save appropriate form as Firstname_Lastname_form.pdf
  3. Make a spreadsheet with all of your expenses that you want to have reimbursed by the PhD Forum. Include each item (for which you also provide a receipt) as well as the total amount. Only include expenses up to the maximum given above in the Excel sheet. Name this file Firstname_Lastname_table.xls/xlsx/csv
  4. Send these three appropriately named files to If you do not follow this naming/file format, you won’t receive your reimbursement.

If you are a student at a non-US-based institution, you will receive instructions separately after the conference.
